Road Trip Update and Run 10 Feed 10 Race and Giveaway

Hi all!

I have SO MUCH to update you on and have really missed writing, and that will happen this week. Marathon training has been going well, albeit not perfectly by any means. Turns out multiple days of 6+ hours in the car can lead to tougher runs! I'm trying to be a dedicated lover to my foam roller and to stretch as much as possible.

For now, I wanted to be sure I finally got this info out to any NYC runner readers regarding the Run 10 Feed 10 race happening on September 22 in New York City. I also have a giveaway for you all! I've included all the info about the race below, along with a few snapshots from my trip so far.

Run 10 Feed 10
Right now, over 50 million Americans are food insecure, meaning they don't know from where their next meal is coming. The reality is that there is enough food in the world for everyone to get the nourishment they need for a healthy and productive life. The other reality is that we can do something about it. Together, we can make a huge impact in a very simple way. All you have to do is RUN!
Women’s Health Magazine and the Feed Foundation are holding the 2nd annual RUN10 FEED10 10k philanthropic race and wellness event that helps fight domestic hunger.   The concept is simple, register to run a 10K and feed 10 people in the NYC community.
Kicking off the event series in New York City on September 22, 2013, thousands of participants will run down the West Side Highway for the timed race ending at Pier 84 at Hudson River Park.  A post-race wellness festival will feature yoga sessions, nutrition and beauty consultations and great giveaways.

Plus,  singer and actress (Glee), Naya Rivera, will kick off the NYC event and perform her new single LIVE for the first time in a special concert for the runners. Other great celeb guest include nutrition demos from Food Network chef, Ellie Krieger and meet and greets with Olympic soccer star Alex Morgan. Finally, Good Morning America will be broadcasting live from the event with meteorologist Ginger Zee chatting with runners and special guests.

A discount code is available for Jen's Best Life readers of $5 off by entering R10F10USA at registration checkout!!

Registration Fee: Sign up for Run 10 FEED 10 at www.run10feed10.com. Included in your $60 registration is race entry, your donation of 10 meals and a limited-edition FEED bag.

Giveaway:  One reader will win a RUN 10 FEED 10 bag! Simply comment on this post telling me what cause you like to run races to support. I'll pick a winner by September 16th, 2013!

Road Trip Snapshots

I am currently in Arizona, about to head to the Grand Canyon to hike. On Wednesday evening, I picked Sourabh and Mason up at LAX and on Thursday morning, I dropped Katie off to fly back to Chicago.

I'm now on the national parks leg of my Epic Road Trip! Here's a bit of what I've been up to in Portland, Eugene, Monterey, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

The incredible TartBerry froyo parlor in Portland. This was only half the toppings!

Portland's International Rose Test Garden

It drizzled off and on all day in Portland, just to give Katie the true Northwest experience, so we did a lot of huddling.

Portland's Japanese Garden -- yes, there were a lot of gardens visited in Portland

Roughly 9 miles on Pre's Running Trail in Eugene, OR

Seeing Mt Shasta for the first time!!

And another Mt Shasta pic for good measure. It's over 14,000 ft tall!

Katie having difficulty with her whole hog pork at the amazing Ad Hoc

Saturday breakfast in San Francisco at the Ferry Terminal Farmer's Market

San Francisco's Bay Bridge

A sadly shortened long run along the beach in Monterey
(only 12.67 miles after hamstring pain hit)

That bummer of a long run was made better by this Monterey sunset

Labor Day drive down Highway 1 from Monterey to Los Angeles
(Bixby Bridge is in the corner)

Running in the Hollywood Hills = great views and sad quads

At the top, after running up roughly 700 ft of mountain in 85 degree weather.
I'm officially no longer scared of the Harlem Hills.

Arizona landscape from I-40

I plan on doing a more in-depth post on each city I visited and each national park, mentioning the great food I've enjoyed and the things I've been able to do. If you have any specific questions about the places I've visited so far, please let me know!!

  1. Great to hear from you, friend! I've done a few small-town races that benefited local charities. It's always a good thing when you can use your passion to help others.

  2. I like to run for animal causes, but also for abused and neglected children. Really, I just want to run for a charity that is honest and that works hard to make the world a better place.

  3. Ahhhh I LOVE this. We went camping in the Taconic region this past weekend, and the mountains made me think of you. I love running for The Nature Conservancy and other environmental charities because conservation benefits EVERYONE and I want to help pay back for the beautiful natural places (especially forests) I am blessed to run through myself

  4. PS: I ALWAYS use Charity Miles when I run. That helps double my impact ;)

  5. Nice to have an update from you!!! looks like you have been having an amazing trip.

I am running NYCM for Team for Kids this year - I know how running has changed my life and can think of no better way to share my love for the sport than helping youth get involved in running and fitness.
